How can the Fourth Industrial Revolution help achieve SDG 7?

840 million people still lack electricity access, only 17.5 per cent of final energy consumption is from renewable energy and the rate of improvement in reducing energy intensity slowed down in recent years. This raises the alarm that the world is not on track for meeting the targets enshrined in Sustainable Development Goal 7 by 2030.

An emerging trend, often referred to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, has gained considerable momentum and offers tremendous opportunities for overcoming global development challenges. This phenomenon is linked to rapid advancements in the field of frontier technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, robotics, block-chain, artificial intelligence, rapid prototyping and augmented reality that have noticeably transcended into the energy sector.
